Willson Contreras taking in Wrigley Field one last time is heartbreaking

Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras took in Wrigley Field for the final time of the season in Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Chicago Cubs‘ 2021 season is nearing its end. After a strong start to the campaign, the Cubs underwent a lengthy losing streak, causing team president Jed Hoyer to sell every player of value at the trade deadline, including Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez and Kris Bryant. The last member of the young core remaining in the Windy City is catcher Willson Contreras, but his future with the team is very much in doubt.

On Sunday, at the Cubs’ final home game of the season, Contreras took in the crowd and atmosphere one last time.

Unfortunately for the Cubs, they lost 4-2 to allow the Cardinals to extend their winning streak to 16 games.

There is some uncertainty regarding Contreras’ future with the organization. With the 2021 season near completion, the catcher has one more year of team control remaining before he hits unrestricted free agency at the conclusion of the 2022 campaign. Sure, Hoyer can choose to sign Contreras to a contract extension, but with the team trading away franchise cornerstones like Rizzo, Baez and Bryant this year, it is not out of the realm of possibility that he could choose to flip the catcher for value instead of allowing him to walk into the open market for nothing.

This season, Contreras has recorded a .231 batting average, a .766 OPS, 21 home runs, 53 RBI and 93 hits in 123 games.

The Cubs will certainly be a team to follow throughout the Hot Stove season. When it comes to Contreras’ future with the team, all Cubs fans can do is wait and see what happens.
