Shaquille O’Neal is known all around the world as a celebrity, but he wants to change that.

One of the most famous basketball players of all time, Shaquille O’Neal, says he’s over being a celebrity.

O’Neal amassed global fame during his decorated19-year career in the NBA. He was one of the league’s most successful players and ended his career as a 15-time All-Star. He is also one of just three players in NBA history who earned NBA MVP, All-Star Game MVP and Finals MVP awards during the same season.

Since retiring in 2011, he’s only increased his popularity by appearing in numerous commercials, working as a television sports analyst, and getting involved with other pop culture pursuits.

But Shaq told the New York Post that he doesn’t belong with the “crazy” celebrities around him, and doesn’t want the celebrity title at all anymore.

"“Just because I made it doesn’t mean I’m bigger than you, smarter than you — just because I have more money doesn’t mean I’m better than you. I’ve never been that way and I never will be that way. So I don’t want to be in that category of people.”"

Shaquille O’Neal explains why he is done with being a celebrity

It seems O’Neal’s real problem is with the perception of celebrities as people who are able to do whatever they want and get away with treating others poorly. That makes sense, as Shaq has been known to use his position to help others. He’s started community education initiatives, donated to youth sports programs, and recently even paid for a stranger’s engagement ring.

For all that he has accomplished, it is impossible for him to dissolve out of the public eye. At least he can use the attention to spread messages about kindness and be his own kind of celebrity.
