Mets: Jacob deGrom’s contract provides more questions than answers
New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom is officially out for the remainder of the season.
New York Mets manager Luis Rojas announced on Tuesday that pitcher Jacob deGrom is officially out for what’s left of the season. Jacob hasn’t pitched in a game since July 7 after he tore a ligament in his elbow.
It was only back in 2019 that deGrom was expected to be in Queens for the remainder of his career, but the likelihood of him being on another team after the 2022 MLB season is high.
Jacob deGrom’s career and contract with the New York Mets is in question
Jacob deGrom went from a player who was set to be a New York Met for life to a player whose life after 2022 isn’t clear. After next season, he will be eligible to opt-out of his contract and sign with another team.
Injuries limited him to 15 starts this season and while he still put up impressive numbers during his 2021 campaign, the year didn’t go as deGrom planned.
New York went from leading the NL East to currently sitting 13 games back from the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Wild Card race. The Mets found themselves on a fast track to nowhere in the second half of the season.
Rojas said that deGrom has made a full recovery and is expected to have a normal offseason. Both sides agreed that it’s best to not return this year.
In 2019, deGrom signed a five-year, $137 million extension with New York. There was talk earlier this year that Jacob not only was on track to win his third NL Cy Young award, but that he was also one of the MVP candidates.
Now, deGrom’s future is clouded by his injuries. Will he be back to his old self in 2022?
