Will Braves, Brewers regret big trade that never came to be?
By Mark Powell
The Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers were one of several teams that tried to acquire Pittsburgh Pirates’ outfielder Bryan Reynolds at the trade deadline.
The price for Reynolds was far too high at the time, and it’s easy to see why. The Pirates, for one, don’t want to trade him.
Reynolds is under contract until 2025, and despite four straight arbitration-eligible seasons to round out that deal, Pittsburgh hopes he’s under team control the next time they’re a competitive team.
The All-Star is considered a cornerstone piece of this Pirates team, and despite their willingness to sell at the deadline, Reynolds was never seen as a realistic trade piece.
MLB rumors: Braves, Brewers were in on Bryan Reynolds
The Braves needed outfield help at the time, as they had just lost Ronald Acuña for the season. The Brewers, meanwhile, were likely just doing their due diligence.
Sure, those teams should regret not acquiring Reynolds considering his impressive statistical season, but it’s tough to blame them when he wasn’t really available, per the Athletic’s Rob Biertempfel.
"“In July, the Pirates rebuffed trade overtures about Reynolds from several clubs, including what a source described as “big-time offers” from the Brewers and Braves. He’s not going anywhere.”"
There’s a possibility the Pirates could shop Reynolds some time in the future, but for now he’s a centerpiece of their future and arguably the face of the franchise. Had they traded him instead of Adam Frazier, I can assure you Bucs fans would’ve formed lines outside of Bob Nutting’s office to give him a piece of their minds.
