What is the most runs scored in the MLB playoffs?
With the MLB playoffs set to start next week, there will be a number of exciting teams hitting the diamond. There will be a lot of big bats and powerful lineups looking to score a lot of runs. Let’s look back at a few impressive scoring records that are currently in place, and see if they are at risk of falling this post season.
Most runs scored in MLB Playoffs
Most runs scored by a team in a playoff game
On October 10, 1999, the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 23-7 in Game 4 of the ALDS. Boston’s 23 runs is the current record for most runs by a single team in a post season game. They are the only team to score 20 or more runs in a playoff game. The next highest is 19 by the Yankees in 2004.
Cleveland’s contribution of seven runs also gave this game the record for highest combined runs scored at 30.
Most runs scored by a team throughout playoffs
The record for the most runs scored in a postseason is held by the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers and the 2002 Anaheim Angels with 101 runs. The tiebreaker on impressiveness however goes to the 2002 Angels because they accomplished the task in 16 games compared to the 2020 Dodgers 18. The next closest team is the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals with 100 runs in 18 games.
Will either MLB playoffs record fall this season
The 2021 playoffs have some explosive offense but also some wicked pitching. It is pretty unlikely that the Red Sox record of 23 runs in a game is challenged, but the Dodgers who tied the record for most total runs last season showed that it is attainable. With them back to defend their title against a field of high scoring teams, expect the 101 runs in a postseason to be challenged.
