Zach Ertz, tight end

Tight end Eric Ebron has had a horrid start to the season. Ebron has caught only one of his six targets, and he has dropped two passes.

The Steelers primarily utilize Ebron in the passing game. He has played in 81 passing snaps and only 17 rushing snaps. So, Ebron does not add a lot of value to the team, when he is struggling as a receiver.

Meanwhile, Pat Freiermuth has played considerably better; he has hauled in eight of his 10 targets for 82 yards and a touchdown. Nevertheless, it would benefit the Steelers to have two productive tight ends in the passing game, especially with Ben Roethlisberger’s offensive limitations.

Zach Ertz was mentioned often in potential trades during the offseason, but he remains on the Eagles’ roster.

Ertz was selected to the Pro Bowl for three consecutive seasons from 2017-2019. He is still a talented tight end, but he is playing a minimized role due to the presence of Dallas Goedert.

This season, Ertz has seven receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown on 11 targets. In addition, he has a passer rating of 120.6 when targeted.

According to Over the Cap, the Steelers have approximately $11 million in cap space. Ertz carries a cap hit of $12.7 million, so the Steelers would need to free up some cap space to complete a deal.
