If Graham Mertz can’t get the job done for Wisconsin football, do the Badgers have a backup quarterback who could take over for him?

Wisconsin football fans were rightly excited about the 2021 season and the potential of quarterback Graham Mertz in particular.

Unfortunately, the season has not gone to plan and Mertz has not looked like the quarterback many hoped he would be.

Mertz threw six interceptions in the opening three games with just one passing touchdown to his name. He completed less than 50 percent of his passes in a loss to Notre Dame.

A slow start against Michigan didn’t do much to raise hopes. And then in the third quarter, Mertz took a big hit and was replaced by Chase Wolf.

Graham Mertz’ backup is Chase Wolf

Chase Wolf is the man the Badgers would turn to if Mertz got hurt or benched. He is a junior from Cincinnatti who has made six appearances for Wisconsin.

The former three-star recruit ranked No. 1,016 in the 247Sports composite for the class of 2018.

Last year, he saw action in the final two games of the season. He came in against Minnesota and hit 4-of-5 passes for 15 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also threw an interception against Wake Forest.

While it may be natural to call for the backup when the starter isn’t producing much, this situation doesn’t fit that rallying cry. Badger fans should bemoan losing Jack Coan to Notre Dame more than anything.

Graham Mertz injury update

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, FOX reporter Jenny Taft relayed that Mertz will be out for the remainder of the game. Wolf will be the quarterback for the Badgers for the remainder of the Michigan game. Depending on the severity of the injury, Wolf may be in line for his first career start next week at Illinois.
