Bears depth chart: Who is David Montgomery’s backup?
By Josh Hill
The Chicago Bears need to find a David Montgomery backup option after he left Sunday’s game with a gruesome knee injury.
While the Bears managed to win on Sunday, giving Justin Fields his first win as an NFL starter, there was a dark cloud over the celebration.
Late in the game, while trying to run out the clock, David Montgomery suffered a brutal knee injury that forced him out of the game. As soon as Montgomery was hit, he writhed in pain and threw his helmet off as teammates around him immediately took a knee with concern.
Montgomery was able to mostly walk off with help but he went straight back to the locker room. The injury was so gruesome that Fox refused to show the replay. It’s unclear what the severity of Montgomery’s injury is but it seems like it might be a while.

If Montgomery misses time, the weight of the Bears rushing attack will fall on the legs of Damien Williams.
Matt Nagy’s offense has leaned heavily on Montgomery so far this season, efficiently using him in key spots to try and get the offense flowing. With Justin Fields taking over the reigns under center, Montgomery’s value to the game plan only increased, so losing him for any period of time will be a brutal blow to a Bears offense that finally looked like it was starting to get its act together.
Bears depth chart after David Montgomery
Without Montgomery, the Bears depth chart is pretty bare at running back. Here’s what it looks like heading into Week 5:
RB1: Damien Williams
RB2: Khalil Herbert
That’s it.
Tarik Cohen is still working his way back from injury so he’s out of the picture at the moment, which means the Bears only have two healthy running backs on the roster right now.
