In Game 162 when every out counts, Gio Urshela made a catch that would make Derek Jeter proud against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Yankees struggled to score against the Rays and starter Michael Wacha despite his 5.05 ERA. If New York needed a spark plug, Urshela just provided them with one, running into the dugout to record the final out of the top of the sixth inning.
Yankees: Michael Kay’s call of Gio Urshela catch
Kay had a few issues down the stretch, including mental errors on Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo home runs. But as it pertains to Urshela, Kay was right on time.
OH MY GIO URSHELA ‼️‼️‼️ 👀👀👀

Was it Derek Jeter good? No, likely not. Urshela didn’t crash into the stands and come out bloodied. Yet, running into the dugout with no regard for one’s health to catch a foul ball deserves recognition.
Gio Urshela’s catch reminds fans of Derek Jeter
Jeter’s grab from the shortstop position is arguably his signature moment in the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.
Given the timing of Urshela’s catch, it does deserve the same level of praise.
Gio with a Derek Jeter catch into the Rays dugout. Coming out of the game with an injury.

What a play by Gio Urshela in the 6th. Really glad to see him get up & walk away from that. Great play, scary scene. #Yankees

Gio Urshela did not almost die for the Yankees to get shut out. LFG!!

Do not forget next week when the Rays are being sold as a feel good story that 30 people let Gio Urshela’s body smash into the bench in a game that is meaningless to them

Gio Urshela injury
Urshela remained in the game despite initially being shaken up on the play. Given how hard he crashed into the dugout, that is some serious toughness.
Gio will never be Jeter — no one is claiming this. But he deserves the same kind of praise, especially if the Yankees are able to cement their spot in the Wild Card game.
