Max Muncy injury: Awkward first-base collision sidelines Dodgers star
By Mark Powell
Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Max Muncy was sidelined after an awkward collision at first base with Padres’ Jace Peterson.
Muncy and the Dodgers are hoping to force a Game 163 with the NL West on the line, as they and the San Francisco Giants are separated by just one game.
In pretty much any other season, the Dodgers 100-plus wins would be enough to ensure the division crown and then some. Yet, this isn’t any ordinary year.
The Giants have set a franchise-best win mark, and the Dodgers are breathing down their neck. The loser gets to host the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild Card game.
As important as the division may be, losing a player the caliber of Muncy for any extended period of time would be a brutal blow.
What happened to Max Muncy?
Muncy was forced to leave the game after his collision with Peterson. The Padres have virtually nothing to play for at this juncture, making the unfortunate collision all the more frustrating for a Dodgers team on a quest to repeat.
Los Angeles is already dealing with injury problems in the starting rotation, with Clayton Kershaw out to start the postseason with a forearm issue.
Max Muncy injury update
Muncy suffered an apparent wrist injury. Dave Roberts and the Dodgers have yet to provide further update, as Muncy is being examined by trainers in the clubhouse.
Dodgers depth chart: Who is Max Muncy’s backup?
Cardinals legend turned Angel and now Dodger Albert Pujols is Muncy’s backup at first base. Given his playoff resume, there are worse players for LA to replace Muncy with.
