Last in their division, the 1-2 Seattle Seahawks travel to Santa Clara in hopes of a win against their 2-1 NFC West rival, the San Francisco 49ers.

After clinching the NFC West title in 2020, the Seahawks now rank in the bottom of their division at 1-2. The defensive woes that plagued them for the first half of 2020 have resurfaced quickly, but Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll vows the defense “will change” in their first NFC West matchup of the season.

Although they are 2-1, the third-ranked 49ers face their own troubling issues, the most pressing being their turbulent situation at running back. It looks as if Elijah Mitchell will start on Sunday, but a shoulder injury could cede the reps to Trey Sermon. No matter who starts, San Francisco is expected to do well against Seattle’s bottom-ranked rush defense. As far as passing goes, 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is expected to steal the spotlight against Seattle’s dilapidated secondary.

If the Seahawks do manage to turn it around, they certainly have all the pieces to make it happen.  Russell Wilson, D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Chris Carson make for a high-powered offense with the power to score quickly and early. Really, as long as Seattle’s defense can hold, they could come away with a 2-2 record in Week 4.

If not, tragedy would befall the 1-3 Seahawks as they enter a deep rut early in the season. Meanwhile, the 49ers would springboard to 3-1, which keeps them in competition for the NFC West title.
