Giants rumors: Could San Francisco lure Marcus Semien back to the Bay?
By Scott Rogust
Marcus Semien is expected to cash-in this winter after an impressive 2021 campaign. Could the San Francisco Giants sign him?
The Toronto Blue Jays narrowly missed out on the postseason after the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox clinched both AL Wild Card spots with wins on Sunday. Now, the Blue Jays will have to navigate through an offseason where they have two players coming off tremendous seasons in starting pitcher Robbie Ray and second baseman Marcus Semien. Both are expected to cash-in on huge deals, and there may be one team interested in bringing in the infielder.
In Sportnet’s Shi Davidi’s latest article, he mentioned that the NL West champion San Francisco Giants “are expected to try and lure the Bay Area native back home.”
“The competition for him, even in what should be an historic free-agent shortstop market, will be fierce and the San Francisco Giants are expected to try and lure the Bay Area native back home,” writes Davidi. “During the Blue Jays’ recent series in Tampa, they had a senior front office member there to advance scout the Rays, but surely also to keep an eye on Semien.”
Could the Giants land Marcus Semien in free agency?
The Giants shocked the world this season by winning a franchise-record 107 games, edging the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West title for the first time since 2012. If they are truly interested in Semien this offseason, that shows they plan on contending for the World Series for the foreseeable future.
What is interesting to note is that San Francisco just got done giving shortstop Brandon Crawford a two-year, $32 million contract extension back in August. So, if the Giants are going to pursue Semien, they will be playing him at second like the Blue Jays have this season.
Semien played in all 162 games this campaign, where he slashed .265/.334/.538 while recording a career-high 45 home runs and 102 RBI.
While the Giants could be interested in Semien, they will have to fend off a ton of other teams that are no doubt going to be in the market for the middle infielder. Of course, you can never rule out the Blue Jays finding a way to retain him.
Hot Stove season is going to be fun.
