John Sterling sounds absolutely miserable as Yankees struggle in Wild Card game
By Scott Rogust
New York Yankees play-by-play commentator John Sterling thought Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run in the AL Wild Card game.
The New York Yankees made it to the postseason on a walk-off win over the Tampa Bay Rays this past Sunday. That gave them the opportunity to play in the AL Wild Card game at Fenway Park against the rival Boston Red Sox. Things have not gone to plan for the Yankees.
The tone was set in the top of the first inning when it looked as though Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run over the Green Monster in left field. Instead, it bounced off the wall for a single.
While the ESPN broadcast was fooled by the high-hit single, they had nothing on Yankees radio play-by-play commentator John Sterling, who believed Stanton had hit a home run and sounded confused as to why he was standing on first base.
John Sterling fooled by Giancarlo Stanton’s non-home run
To be fair, everyone was fooled by the Stanton “home run” that was actually a single.
Yankee fans were not having fun through the first six innings of the AL Wild Card game. Ace Gerrit Cole was chased in the third inning after only recording six outs. The Red Sox took an early 3-0 lead on a two-run homer by Xander Bogaerts and a solo homer by Kyle Schwarber.
But things got better for the Yankees in the top of the sixth after Anthony Rizzo ended the shutout with a home run around the Pesky Pole in right field.
However this game ends, Sterling’s call will live in infamy.
