Ed Orgeron highlighted one area his LSU football team must get better at after the Auburn loss.

It is only Week 6 in the 2021 college season, but Ed Orgeron’s LSU football team has already been eliminated from the College Football Playoff.

The LSU Tigers suffered their second defeat this season, falling at home to divisional rival Auburn, 24-19. This was the first time Auburn defeated the Bayou Bengals in Death Valley in over two decades. Despite recruiting at an elite level throughout the Orgeron era in Baton Rouge, the Tigers are among the most underachieving teams in the SEC over the last two years. They must improve.

Orgeron may have taken responsibility for the crushing home loss to Auburn, but identified the one area LSU has to get better at before Week 6’s night game at No. 16 Kentucky.

Will this be an easy fix for LSU or will the Tigers come out of Kroger Field with a gross 3-3 record?

Ed Orgeron: LSU football team must improve in the run game

The bottleneck for LSU seems to be the pace at which plays are called by new offensive coordinator Jake Peetz. Orgeron wants to simplify the offense so that calls will come in quicker and will not be changed in the final seconds.

Doing so may help the Tigers be able to run the ball better, which would make things easier for second-year starting quarterback Max Johnson as well.

“Jake [Peetz] is trying to do a tremendous job,” said Orgeron. “I believe in him. There are just a few things we need to get fixed … We just need to settle down. Mostly just call the play and let them go and not try to change it; I think that’s when we get into most of our problems.”

Simplifying the offense, in theory, should serve LSU long-term, but keep in mind Kentucky is so well-coached under defensive-minded Mark Stoops. Kentucky has gotten to 5-0 with great defensive play and timely offensive drives. The Wildcats may only be able to win one way, but it sounds like going back to the basics for LSU offensively will play right into Kentucky’s game plan.

If LSU comes out of Lexington 3-3, Orgeron will have among the hottest seats in the Power Five.
