Yankees third-base coach Phil Nevin made a terrible mistake in the American League Wild Card game, and the Red Sox will surely thank him postgame.

Credit the Sox outfield for a tremendous relay to home plate, but this is on the third-base coach alone.

Giancarlo Stanton hit another near-home run, his second of the game, with Aaron Judge at first base. Judge should have been held at third base, but instead of playing it safe with just one out in the inning, Nevin opted to send his star player, leaving him out to dry.

The Kiké Hernandez-Xander Bogaerts-Kevin Plawecki relay worked like a charm.

Who is the Yankees third base coach?

By no means is Phil Nevin bad at his job, but he’s catching heat on social media for sending Judge. Nevin ought to have known better, as Judge was halfway between second and third base when that ball neared the infield.

Judge is not Billy Hamilton.

At this point, though, one has to wonder why the Red Sox would pitch to Stanton again today. He’s smoked both baseballs he’s hit thus far, the first being off Nathan Eovaldi and the second off the Boston bullpen. There’s no telling what he can do with another opportunity.
