Why did the Patriots cut Stephon Gilmore?

The New England Patriots shockingly decided to release Stephon Gilmore on Wednesday morning. Why would they make such a call?
Gilmore was scheduled to come off of the PUP list soon, making the decision all the more puzzling.
Nonetheless, there’s been tension between the two sides for quite some time over Gilmore’s contract. In the end, it’s quite simple — Gilmore wants more money, and the Patriots want none of that.
When he’s healthy, Gilmore has a claim as the best cornerback in all of football. He won the 2019 AFC Defensive Player of the Year award for a reason.

Per Adam Schefter, Gilmore was released because of his contract. The Patriots are right up against the cap, and Gilmore’s deal expires at the end of the year.
