Cardinals: Fan-created video proves Mike Shildt made wrong call with Alex Reyes
A St. Louis Cardinals fan put together a compelling video to prove manager Mike Shildt made the wrong choice putting Alex Reyes in against the Dodgers.
Baseball managers have to make tough choices in the postseason. Get something wrong and you have to answer to your bosses and fans.
The decision to depend on Alex Reyes at the end of the NL Wild Card game against the Dodgers has Mike Shildt taking heat.
Shildt brought Reyes in to close out the ninth inning with a man on first and two outs. Chris Taylor made a fool out of him with a walk off home run to send the Cardinals home for the offseason.
Cardinals fan put together evidence to prove Alex Reyes was the wrong pick
A fan on Reddit put together a video to prove Reyes was the wrong choice to finish off that game.
Reyes was an All-Star player in the first half of the season with a 1.52 ERA and 20 saves in 38 appearances. However, his performance fell off a cliff in the second half of the season. His ERA after the All-Star break was 5.52.
The video does a good job of showing how Reyes didn’t respond well to high-pressure situations.
It wasn’t going to get more high-pressure than Wednesday night’s battle with the Dodgers. It was win-or-go-home.
Shildt may have wanted to show his faith in Reyes, hoping to see him step up in the biggest moment. His faith was misplaced. He only put his pitcher in a bad spot.
There should be no shame in losing to the Dodgers, even if St. Louis had a magical run to secure the wild card place. Los Angeles was always going to be a tough one to beat. Still, fans can be rightly frustrated at how close they came to pulling it off, only to have a mistake by the manager take it all away.
