The Pittsburgh Steelers will likely be looking for a new quarterback, but Spencer Rattler hasn’t proved he should be the guy to replace Ben Roethlisberger.Ā

With another underwhelming performance underway as the Oklahoma Sooners trail the Texas Longhorns, it’s clear that Spencer Rattler is not the best quarterback available in this draft class. Given how talented he is and the fact that he plays for Lincoln Riley, many assumed Rattler would be ready to go on to the NFL sooner rather than later.

But right now it looks like Rattler still has some work to do if he wants to make it to the NFL. He’s been benched against Texas as the Sooners trail 38-20 at the half and the Pittsburgh Steelers, for example, should start considering other quarterbacks as they try to find an eventual replacement for Ben Roethlisberger.

Given how Roethlisberger is playing, the Steelers need someone to take that job soon. The Steelers are 1-3 through the first four weeks and the 39-year-old quarterback has thrown for 1,033 yards and four touchdowns while completing 64.1 percent of his passes. Unfortunately, he’s also thrown four picks to go with that.

Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler will need to rebuild his draft stock after an awful showing against Texas

Roethlisberger hasn’t looked sharp, he’s getting older, and the Steelers are struggling. Pittsburgh should be considering almost every possible available quarterback in this upcoming draft, but Rattler hasn’t proven that he’s ready for that sort of job.

This isn’t the first time this season that Rattler has struggled, but this is definitely going to be a game many people point to when discussing how poorly he’s played. In the first half against Texas, Rattler has completed 8-of-15 passes for 111 yards. He hasn’t thrown a touchdown, but he has tossed an interception.

That’s just not all that impressive.

Rattler is talented, but it’s clear that he’s underachieving right now and performances like this will hurt his draft stock considerably.

If he’s able to get back out on the field against Texas or earn back his starting job later down the line, Rattler will have chances to showcase his skills once more. But right now, it doesn’t look like he’s ready for an NFL gig.
