Texas quarterback Casey Thompson was born into the Texas-Oklahoma rivalry due to his father playing for the Sooners.

The Red River Showdown pits Texas against Oklahoma in one of the best rivalries in college football. It’ll also feature the story of Texas quarterback Casey Thompson looking to beat the team his father used to quarterback.

Thompson’s dad is Charles Thompson who ran the Oklahoma wishbone offense when he won the starting job in 1987 and led the Sooners to a win over No. 1 Nebraska.

Barry Switzer recruited Thompson to Oklahoma where he turned down a chance to play professional baseball to be a star on the gridiron from 1986-1988.

In January of 1989, Thompson was caught selling cocaine to an undercover agent and sentenced to two years in prison. He was suspended from the team as Switzer had to deal with a media frenzy surrounding his out of control football program. This led to Switzer resigning as the head coach at Oklahoma.

After his release from prison, Charles returned to school where he played running back at NAIA Central State University.

His eldest son Kendal played quarterback at Oklahoma before transferring to Utah and now Casey is the starting quarterback at rival Texas.

Rivalries aside, we all know who Charles will be rooting for in today’s Red River Showdown.

Thompson sat down with Chris Fowler on College GameDay to talk about his past and his son.
