Projected College Football Playoff rankings after Week 6: Alabama still alive, Iowa’s compelling case
Week Six of the college football season has created a new projected College Football Playoff. How does everything shake out?
Chaos has finally struck the college football season. Two top four teams have gone down, including top overall ranked Alabama. The Crimson Tide’s loss on the road to Texas A&M as well as Penn State’s loss to Iowa has provided a shake up to the College Football Playoff scene.
If there was ever a year for parity in college football this is it. The time for some fresh blood in the College Football Playoff scene is now. Clemson has already fell out early this year and now the defending National Champions have to work their way back in.
Here’s how the College Football Playoff projects after Week Six.
Projected College Football Playoff rankings after Week 6
1. Georgia Bulldogs
The Bulldogs picked up another impressive win as they defeated Auburn 34-10 on the road. Georgia continues to flex its defensive muscles. The Bulldogs will move into the top spot now that the Crimson Tide have fallen. It’s Georgia’s spot to hold onto unless someone can knock them off.
2. Iowa Hawkeyes
Someone had to win and someone had to lose between the Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions. Iowa battled hard to come back and take care of Penn State at home 23-20. It was a tremendously physical game and the Hawkeyes have a chance to roll going forward with their schedule. They should enjoy life in the top two.
3. Cincinnati Bearcats
If there is going to be a season where a Group of Five school sneaks into the College Football Playoff, it’s this one. Cincinnati blasted Temple at home on Friday a week after defeating Notre Dame. Cincinnati is the team now to get this spot with BYU falling at home. If the Bearcats go undefeated it’s going to be hard to keep them out.
4 Oklahoma Sooners
When Oklahoma made the switch to Caleb Williams at quarterback, it looked like a whole new program. The Sooners won the game of the year against Texas and are also a team on the cusp. The best news for Oklahoma is it remains undefeated after six games. By virtue of two programs in front of them dropping, Oklahoma could sneak back in.
Playoff hopefuls on the outside looking in
5. Alabama Crimson Tide
After a stunning loss on the road to Texas A&M, the Alabama Crimson Tide are now on the outside looking in. Alabama won’t slide down too far but they’re going to have to run the table here and have some help to get back in the top four.
6. Penn State Nittany Lions
The Nittany Lions drop out after their loss on the road against Iowa. However, it was a bitter fight until the end and Penn State shouldn’t fall too far. If they can run the table the rest of the way and take down Penn State, Ohio State, and probably Iowa in a Big Ten title game, then they can get their spot. It’s a tall order but it’s on the table for them.
