Jon Gruden to resign as Las Vegas Raiders coach following email scandal.
Just minutes after the New York Times published a second expose into Jon Gruden’s emails, the Las Vegas Raiders has reportedly told his staff he will be resigning.
According to ESPN’s Suzy Kolber, special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia is expected to replace Gruden as the team’s interim head coach.
Jon Gruden to step down as Raiders head coach after bombshell report
The bombshell report found that Gruden had used homophobic and misogynistic language in multiple emails to then-Washington Football Team team president during his time working for ESPN as an analyst for “Monday Night Football.” According to the New York Times, Gruden “denounced the emergence of women as referees, the drafting of a gay player and the tolerance of players protesting during the playing of the national anthem.”
On Friday, a Wall Street Journal report revealed an email Gruden sent back in 2011, where he used racially-insensitive language towards NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith. The team released a statement condemning Gruden’s language, while the now-former head coach said that he was not racist in a postgame press conference on Sunday.
Gruden, who was part of the “Monday Night Football” broadcast, signed a 10-year, $100 million contract in 2018 to become the head coach of the Raiders. This was his second stint with the organization, as he was previously their head coach from 1998 until 2001.
From the beginning of the 2018 campaign until Week 5 this year, the Raiders held a 22-31 record with Gruden at the helm. The Raiders never made it to the playoffs.
