When looking at the Giants’ list of free agents, there are a couple of starters that need to be retained. Kevin Gausman secured the figurative bag this year after recording a 2.81 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and 227 strikeouts. Anthony DeSclafani accumulated a 3.17 ERA and 1.09 WHIP.

The Giants are going to need as much money as possible to bring back these two starters. To do so, they will probably have to make a tough choice on Johnny Cueto.

In 2021, Cueto has had a tough time staying healthy for the duration of the season. He had multiple stints on the injured list due to a lat strain, a flexor strain and a right elbow strain. Cueto did manage to pitch in 22 games this season, where he recorded a 4.08 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP, 98 strikeouts and 30 walks in 114.2 innings of work.

Cueto has one more year remaining on his deal, but it is a club option worth $22 million for the 2022 season. Considering the team will have to re-sign Gausman and Declafani, seeing whether the Giants pick up Cueto’s option will be a storyline to follow this offseason.
