When is the last time Mississippi State beat Alabama football?

As the Mississippi State Bulldogs get set to host the Alabama Crimson Tide, when was the last time MSU was able to take down the Tide?

As the Alabama Crimson Tide are fresh off a shocking road loss to the Texas A&M Aggies, Nick Saban is taking his team on the road once more to face off against Mike Leach and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

It has been well over a decade since the Mississippi State Bulldogs have found a way to beat Bama, but this particular Crimson Tide team seems more vulnerable than most when it comes to road games. Alabama struggled against a relatively up-and-down Florida team in Gainesville and then clearly lost to a bizarre Texas A&M team in College Station.

Leach is looking to lead Mississippi State to its first win over Bama since the mid 2000’s. If you’re doing the math and know a bit about MSU’s history, you’d know that neither of State’s last two coaches were able to get a win against Saban or Alabama.

Dan Mullen, arguably the most successful coach in Mississippi State history, never once was able to get past the Crimson Tide with even his most successful and talented teams falling short against Alabama.

So, when did that last win happen?

It’s been a few seasons since the Bulldogs were able to best the Crimson Tide. Right now, Bama has a 13-game winning streak over the Bulldogs. It’s been 14 years since MSU fans have been able to celebrate a win over their closest SEC neighbor.

In 2007, Sylvester Croom led the Bulldogs to a bizarre, low-scoring 17-12 win over the Crimson Tide. Croom, an Alabama alumnus and former player and assistant coach for legendary coach Bear Bryant, had previously tried to become the head coach at Alabama but never got the opportunity. While he wasn’t all that successful while at State, he did get a pretty important win for the Bulldogs.

That particular Alabama loss was in Saban’s first season with the Tide and obviously things have changed drastically since then. Though Alabama may theoretically be vulnerable, Leach will be facing a much tougher Crimson Tide team than Croom did 14 years ago.
