Tennessee fan becomes instant meme after wild play
By Scott Rogust
A Tennessee Volunteers fan became a meme for his reaction during Saturday’s game against Ole Miss Rebels.
College football fans are bound to see meme-worthy content while watching the countless games airing on Saturdays. But if you happened to be viewing Saturday night’s Tennessee-Ole Miss game, you missed the meme of the season.
Trailing 7-0 to the No. 13 Rebels in the first quarter, the Volunteers appeared to tie things up after forcing a fumble on quarterback Matt Corral, where Tyler Baron returned it 42 yards for a touchdown.
The SEC Network cameras panned to the crowd at Neyland Stadium before cutting to a fan who had a hilarious reaction.
Tennessee’s touchdown was overturned but the meme lives on
That fan had a look of total befuddlement immediately after the play. It is something that will be saved in the drafts for Twitter users for quite some time.
Unfortunately for Tennessee, the touchdown was not upheld. On the fourth-and-three play, the officials ruled that Corral’s forward progress was stopped before he fumbled the ball. So instead of scoring a touchdown, the Volunteers received the ball on a turnover on downs.
Regardless of the end result, social media users are going to look back at this play, not just for the controversial decision by the officials, but for this fan’s shocked reaction.
