4. Is Robert Williams ready for the big time?

The Celtics’ decision to ink Williams to a four-year, $54 million extension this offseason sends a clear signal in their belief in the young big man. Now it’s up to Williams to turn his prodigious potential into production this year.

Talent has never been a question for the athletic big man. Williams has elite athleticism for a center that allows him to be an excellent rim protector and lob threat. He has all the physical tools required to be a plus on both ends of the floor for the Celtics at the center position.

The questions surrounding Williams as a player have always been around his attention to detail. At times, he’s frustrated coaches with his defensive breakdowns and tendency to freelance on the offensive end of the floor. Udoka will need to work hard with Williams to keep him focused on a nightly basis.

The good news for Boston fans is that Al Horford is waiting in the wings as a high-priced insurance policy if Williams falters. The Celtics still need their bet on Williams to pay off if they want to reach their full potential.
