20. Biggest NFL Draft busts of all-time – Seattle Seahawks QB Rick Mirer
The second Seahawk on this list, Rick Mirer was a complete flop for Seattle. A standout quarterback at Notre Dame, Mirer led the Fighting Irish to victory in the 1992 Sugar Bowl and was touted as the second coming of Joe Montana.
There was a significant debate leading up to the draft as to whether Mirer or Drew Bledsoe should be the top pick. New England held the first selection and chose Bledsoe, leaving Mirer for Seattle at no. 2, a move that proved to be the right decision for the Patriots.
The Seahawks let Mirer start from Day 1 and he underwhelmed over the course of four seasons, tossing 41 touchdowns against 56 interceptions. Mirer was traded after the 1996 season to Chicago, where he started just three games before getting cut.
The last time Mirer made a significant impact on the NFL landscape was when he took over as the Jets starting quarterback in 1999 for an injured Vinny Testaverde. Mirer was awful for the Jets, going just 1-6 as a starter before being replaced by Ray Lucas, marking the unofficial end to Mirer’s NFL career outside of a few years bouncing around the league as a backup.
