Bears, determined to ruin Justin Fields, make their offensive line even worse
By Scott Rogust
Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy decided to shuffle up the offensive line mid-game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has not had the easiest rookie season. That is evident since his pass protection at the line of scrimmage has been abysmal due to the multitude of injuries they are dealing with. It certainly does not help that Fields is facing the terrifying pass rush of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Sure enough, Fields was pressured at will by the Bucs defense, where he was sacked four times in the first half and turned the ball over three times. With things already going poorly, head coach Matt Nagy decided to pull backup right tackle Lachavious Simmons and replace him with a backup guard Alex Bars.
Bears make changes to offensive line mid-game in Week 7
Simmons was given the start on Sunday after Elijah Wilkinson was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list prior to the game. Simmons’ day did not go great, as he was responsible for allowing two strips sacks on Fields. Hence why the Bears opted to throw Bars in at right tackle.
Bars does have experience playing the right tackle position. In his sophomore year at Notre Dame, he started all 12 games at right tackle, per his school bio. So it is not like Nagy decided to throw in a guard to replace Simmons just because.
This season, Bars only played 30 offensive snaps, where he did not allow a sack and was not penalized once, per Pro Football Focus.
Fields completed 10-of-17 passes for just 66 yards and an interception in the first half. He lost two of three fumbles.
