Is Patrick Mahomes turning into Jameis Winston for Chiefs?
By John Buhler
If you’ve noticed a higher than usual Patrick Mahomes interception rate, then you aren’t the only one asking what happened to Mahomes this season?
Kansas City Chiefs fans are slowly watching Patrick Mahomes devolve into Jameis Winston.
Okay, that is a tad melodramatic, but Mahomes is straight-up refusing to stop turning the football over. Kansas City is getting thoroughly curb stomped at the Tennessee Titans in their Week 7 game. Mahomes had a horrendous interception and put the ball on the ground a couple of times. Kansas City leads the NFL with 16 turnovers on the year, the same amount they had all of 2020.
While Mahomes had a reckless abandon label coming out of Texas Tech, one would have thought his gunslinger Air Raid mentality would be a thing of the past now that he is playing on supposedly one of the better rosters in football.
Patrick Mahomes interception rate is insane, so what happened to Mahomes?
Look. Winston gets a bad rap. He won a national title and a Heisman Trophy at Florida State. The Seminoles have been dog food since he left Tallahassee. He went No. 1 overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL Draft. While his 30 for 30 was nothing to write home about in 2019, he has a chance to totally redeem himself Lloyd Christmas style now with the New Orleans Saints.
Though Mahomes is more gifted of a playmaker than Winston, they do share similar weaknesses. Undoubtedly, Mahomes went to the picturesque situation out of college in Kansas City, but we all knew that the Chiefs were not going to be an absolute buzz saw for the rest of time. They can still make the playoffs, but they are looking more and more like a Wild Card team at best this season.
The gap between Mahomes and Winston is not as cavernous as one would think it would be.
