Shakur Stevenson a two-time world champion stopping Jamel Herring in 10
Shakur Stevenson talked a lot leading up to his championship bout against Jamel Herring, but he backed it up by delivering a round 10 TKO victory.
Shakur Stevenson was a world champion as a featherweight. He’s now a champion one division up as a super featherweight.
Jamel Herring came to the ring at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA, on Saturday, Oct. 23, as the WBO super featherweight champion, but he had no answers for the significantly younger Stevenson.
Stevenson (17-0, 9 KOs) is a two-time world champion after stopping Herring in round 10. The fight lacked drama as Stevenson controlled the contest from start to finish. The 24-year-old originally from Newark, NJ, made Herring look like all of his 35 years.
Herring (23-3, 11 KOs) is a former Marine and one of the kindest people you will ever meet. He’s a true gentleman, and he never broke character, even when Stevenson taunted him during faceoffs leading up to the fight.
Shakur Stevenson made a statement against Jamel Herring
Stevenson’s pre-fight tactics never got into Herring’s head. He didn’t need to. Stevenson proved that he’s the superior boxer and turned in the best performance of his budding boxing career.
Stevenson and Herring are both southpaws, but Stevenson found a home for his left hand. Herring traveled into its path for much of the early going but started to circle away from it in the later rounds.
It didn’t matter as Stevenson switched to utilizing his lead right hook. Herring’s left eye started to swell early, but his right was busted open in round 10.
As the blood poured from Herring’s wound, Stevenson grew more aggressive. He pelted Herring with lefts and rights, and all Herring could do was try to cover up. Stevenson busted through his guard, and referee Mark Nelson saw enough. He waved the fight off, giving Stevenson the round 10 TKO victory.
Herring never gave up, but the 2016 Olympic silver medalist Stevenson was just too good. Stevenson is the new WBO champ and the new bogeyman of the super featherweight division. The way he looked against Herring, it’s hard to imagine another fighter at 130 pounds that can beat him.
