Rumors surrounding USC football head coach candidates reach peak hilarity with a report linking the Trojans to veteran NFL coach Jeff Fisher.
It wouldnāt be a true USC football coaching search without Jeff Fisherās name coming up.
Thanks to Brett McMurphy of the Action Network, we can all check that one off our bingo cards.
He went on to reference other candidates mentioned by former USC quarterback Carson Palmer, including Penn Stateās James Franklin, Iowa Stateās Matt Campbell, Cincinnatiās Luke Fickell and Mike Tomlin of the Steelers.
USC football coaching candidates: Jeff Fisher joins the fray
USC fans should be no stranger to Fisher. Not only is he a former Trojan, but heās been mentioned as a candidate for the job at his alma mater pretty much every time itās come open in the past decade.
Fisher was mentioned when Pete Carroll needed replacing. He was mentioned after Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian were fired. The fact that heās being mentioned now should come as no surprise.
However, the mention should be the only traction this particular idea receives.
Fisher has zero coaching experience in the college ranks. He hasnāt been a head coach since he was fired by the Rams at the conclusion of the 2016 season. When the hammer finally came down on his coaching career, he hadnāt had a winning record since 2008 when he was the head coach of the Titans. Heās never had to recruit. Heās five years removed from the current trends in the NFL, let alone college football.
USC should hire Fisher if they want to find a way to go 7-9 during a 12-game season. Otherwise, he shouldnāt be considered for one of the top jobs in college football.
