Kansas City Chiefs: Eagles’ DE Derek Barnett

To say that this season has been a disappointment for the Chiefs would be an understatement. They’re losing to good teams, Patrick Mahomes is playing the worst ball of his career, and the defense is a disaster. However, this is still a team that has reached back-to-back Super Bowls and have nearly the same roster. A turnaround is possible, though they need some work.

The Chiefs’ biggest weakness when you watch their defense is a lack of pass rush. They are dead last in the NFL with a 3.32 sack percentage, which is shocking considering they have two guys in Frank Clark and Chris Jones on the outside who are among the highest-paid players on the squad.

They need quarterback pressure. If they get it, a lot of their defensive problems will be alleviated. Enter Derek Barnett, the Eagles’ former first-round pick who at this point in time doesn’t seem to have a future with the team. The team picked up his fifth-year option for 2021, but not much after that.

Chiefs’ general manager Brett Veach has made moves for former first-round picks who have fallen out of favor in the past, and this move just makes too much sense. He’s a free agent after this season, so he could come into Kansas City and try to earn a new contract with the team, meanwhile giving the Chiefs a much-needed presence.
