Bulls receive worst-case Patrick Williams injury update: Season-ending wrist injury

Second-year power forward Patrick Williams will miss the rest of the season after suffering a wrist injury against the New York Knicks. 

The Chicago Bulls are off to a hot start this season, posting a 4-1 record through five games. With that said, the team suffered its first defeat of the year on Thursday night going up against the New York Knicks. That wasn’t the only bad news from that showdown.

In the middle of the action, power forward Patrick Williams took a hard fall and landed hard on his wrist. According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Williams suffered a dislocated wrist and he’ll need to have surgery. Just like that, Williams’ 2021-22 season has come to an end.

Williams’ injury came when he drove the lane and attacked the rim. However, New York’s Mitchell Robinson committed a hard foul and Williams ended up landing awkwardly. Now, Williams will turn his focus to next season.

This is a bit of a disappointment, as Williams really made plenty of strides over the summer and it looked like he was poised for a breakout campaign. The No. 4 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Williams was averaging 6.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per contest this year.

Williams was starting to get more and more playing time as well, as he was seeing action for 25 minutes a night to start off the campaign. Unfortunately for head coach Billy Donovan, he’ll now have to move forward the rest of the winter and spring without the 6-foot-7, 215-pound big man.
