Will Florida fire Dan Mullen? Gators fans sure hope so
By Ethan Lee
Following the embarrassing blowout loss to the Georgia Bulldogs, Florida Gators fans are fed up with their head coach, Dan Mullen.
The Florida Gators aren’t having a very fun season right now. They entered into the year with high expectations, as they do every season, and they’re sitting at 4-4 through eight games. Florida’s most recent loss was a humiliating 34-7 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs.
Georgia is the top-ranked team in the country, but that doesn’t excuse how bad Florida is playing right now. And Gators fans aren’t exactly thrilled with how their head coach is performing.

Of course, some folks REALLY want him fired.
And of course, this sort of record isn’t any good:
How much does Dan Mullen make?
The folks at Florida are paying Mullen a ton of money. At the beginning of this year, Mullen received a contract extension from the Gators athletic department (that’s probably not looking all that great right now). Mullen is actually the sixth highest-paid coach in the country, making $7,570,000 this season.
Dan Mullen buyout
If Florida were to fire him, the Gators would owe him a pretty big buyout. It’s not unmanageable, but the Gators would have to pay Mullen $12 million if they decided they didn’t want him to coach in Gainesville any longer.
How long has Dan Mullen been at Florida?
Mullen has been in Gainesville for a few seasons. Just days after his Mississippi State Bulldogs team was upset in a loss to Ole Miss in the 2017 Egg Bowl, Mullen left Starkville for the Florida Gators.
During his first and second seasons with Florida, in 2018 and 2019, Mullen led the Gators to 21 wins. Florida looked promising in 2020, but finished by losing three consecutive games and ended the year at 8-4. Now, at 4-4 in 2021, the best finish the Gators can hope for is to go 8-4. It remains to be seen just how rough this season will get for Mullen and Florida.
Mullen chose to leave Mississippi State where winning eight to nine games a year would get him contract extensions and praise. Now those sorts of seasons might end up getting him fired given the expectations that come with coaching at Florida.
