TCU football parted ways with longtime head coach Gary Patterson, turning to former Minnesota coach Jerry Kill as the interim.

The second-longest tenured head coach in college football is officially out after Gary Patterson and TCU agreed to part ways on Sunday.

The Horned Frogs will finish out the 2021 season with a new face leading their program, choosing Jerry Kill as the interim head coach.

Who is Jerry Kill?

Kill is best known for his time as Minnesota’s head coach. He has been with TCU for the last two years as an assistant to the head coach.

He spent 2019 in that same role under Justin Fuente at Virginia Tech after a 2017 stint at offensive coordinator at Rutgers.

What was Jerry Kill’s record at Minnesota?

Kill served as the Golden Gophers’ head coach from 2011-15. He went 29-29, twice leading Minnesota to 8-5 records.

His performance in the 2014 season was heralded, earning him the Big Ten Coach of the Year award.

However, after starting the 2015 season 4-3, he retired because of growing health problems. He had previously missed time because of seizures caused by epilepsy. He spent two years out of coaching while focusing on his health.

What was Jerry Kill’s record at Northern Illinois?

Kill got the Minnesota job because of his work at Northern Illinois. He was 23-16 with a 10-3 record in his final season in 2010.

Before he landed his FBS gigs, Kill spent seven seasons with FCS Southern Illinois, taking them from 1-10 in his first year to 12-2 in his last one. He went to the playoffs five times.
