3 Astros who won’t be back next season after World Series defeat

These three members of the Houston Astros won’t return next season after losing the 2021 World Series.

The Houston Astros made it to the World Series for the third time in five years after disposing of the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox in the previous rounds of the postseason. But, they met their match against a red-hot, 88-win Atlanta Braves team.

The Braves defeated the Astros x-x in Game 6 on Tuesday night to win the Commissioner’s Trophy for the first time since 1995. Now, the Astros have to brace for what will be a brutal offseason, and they could stand to lose some premium talent in free agency.

Here are three player who won’t return to Houston next season.

Carlos Correa, SS

It is essentially a virtual guarantee that shortstop Carlos Correa is going to hit the open market and cash in on a huge contract.

The Astros tried to reach an agreement on a contract extension in Spring Training, but they could not meet Correa’s demands ahead of his self-imposed deadline. So, he will enter free agency and could be the top available shortstop.

This season, Correa slashed .279/.366/.485 while recording 26 home runs, 92 RBI, 104 runs and 155 hits. In the postseason, the shortstop recorded a .286 batting average, .786 OPS, one home run, nine RBI, 10 runs and 16 hits entering Game 6.

According to Spotrac’s market value projection, Correa could earn a 10-year contract, worth $266.2 million in total. He will easily command that from another team.
