With an undefeated Oklahoma at No. 8, Texas fans take the opportunity to laugh at the Sooners as they arrive low on list in first CFP rankings.

College football rankings often place powerhouse schools over undefeated smaller programs, but some big undefeated programs still get shafted come ranking season.

That’s what happened to the Oklahoma Sooners, a Big 12 team that is only ranked at No. 8 that is 9-0 this season.

Oklahoma was believed to be in contention for a top four or top five spot, but the precipitous fall to No. 8 was rather unexpected.

Although Oklahoma lead the Big 12 as the only 9-0 team in college football, the argument for their low-ranking rating would be that they haven’t had the strongest schedule. Their first two games were against Tulane University and Western Carolina University, with a 76-0 win in that Week 2 game against Western Carolina University.

Even though the Sooners beat the Texas Longhorns 55-48 in Week 7, it didn’t stop Texas fans from having fun at their bitter rival’s expense.

Even though Oklahoma is undefeated, imaging the team that nearly lost to Kansas State play against Georgia, Alabama, Michigan State or Oregon right now would show that the Sooners are currently out of their depth despite their record.

Still, being undefeated is nothing to sneeze at, and if the Sooners can continue their success, they are certain to make the playoffs in the final rankings.

Former NFL player and current OU football analyst Gabe Ikard reported that Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley plans to send the CFP committee a thank-you basket.

Riley has made it clear in the past that the initial rankings mean little to the overall success of a season.

“To me, it’s just meaningless stuff to kill the time until we get to the end,” Riley said Tuesday before the CFP reveal. “I think a great example is go back and look where we were ranked in the first CFP poll all the years that we got into the CFP.”

“The biggest games, the best games, the most important games all across the country, are still yet to be played,” Roley continued. “There are a lot of good teams that are vying for it. The best ones tend to rise up this time of year and separate themselves. That will happen this year.”
