Even UCF head coach Gus Malzahn believes that the Cincinnati Bearcats got screwed in the first College Football Playoff rankings.

The very first set of College Football Playoff rankings were released this past Tuesday and to no one’s surprise, it was filled with controversial decisions. However, the biggest surprise was the undefeated Cincinnati Bearcats being ranked No. 6 behind one loss teams such as Alabama, Oregon and Ohio State.

UCF Knights head coach Gus Malzahn was one of the many that were upset that Cincinnati ranked outside of the top four, saying that they are right there with Georgia and Alabama as teams who can win the National Championship.

That comes courtesy of Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel.

Malzahn, welcome to the club of those who believe the Bearcats got jobbed out of a playoff spot in the first rankings list of the year.  He knows first hand, as Thamel mentions in his tweet, as the Bearcats defeated the Knights 56-21.

Cincinnati did secure a big win this season after defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the road. Yet, it was not good enough to get ranked in the Top Four.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit explained it best during the reveal show — they will have to hope Georgia can win out the season and defeat Alabama in the SEC title game. That, and the Big Ten title picture will clear up by season’s end. But, they need to keep an eye out for fellow undefeated team Oklahoma, who rank eighth-overall in the rankings. Most importantly, Cincinnati needs to win the remaining games on their schedule.

There are still plenty of games remaining on the year, so there is always a shot that Cincinnati can get in the Playoff somehow, some way.
