5 bold predictions for the Yankees 2021 offseason
1. Marcus Semien will be the team’s biggest acquisition
Semien isn’t the best shortstop available on the free agency market but he might be the best fit for the Yankees. The franchise doesn’t want to block its No. 1 prospect Anthony Volpe for too long at the position. That’s why landing a guy like Semien who can also play second and third base should be especially appealing to Cashman and his front office.
The plan will be to let Semien play short for another season or two while Volpe continues to develop in the minors. Then he can move to another position as his athleticism declines in the field.
No matter what, the Yankees will be paying big money for Semien’s ability to mash at the plate. He projects as a power bat no matter where the team plays him in the infield. Semien may never repeat his MVP caliber performance of 2021, but New York would be thrilled to pry him away from their division rival Blue Jays.
Semien will be expensive, but he won’t require quite as many years as guys like Correa and Corey Seager. A lucrative five-year deal could be enough to land the former Toronto star. That’s just the length of contract the Yankees will be comfortable with and that’s why Semien will be donning pinstripes next season.
