Dan Mullen offers weak excuse for not singing alma mater after Florida lost to South Carolina
By Scott Rogust
Florida head coach Dan Mullen offered an explanation as to why he was not singing the alma mater following loss to South Carolina on Saturday.
Last year, the Florida Gators made it to the SEC championship game against Alabama. This season the Gators under head coach Dan Mullen are 4-5 on the year following their 40-17 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks. After the game, it was clear that Mullen was not on the field singing the alma mater.
After the game, Mullen was asked about not participating not just this week, but after last week’s contest against Georgia. Mullen said that it was because they were on the road and he did not think the school band was there in attendance. You can read Mullen’s full quote below, courtesy of Rivals.com’s Nick de la Torre.
Dan Mullen’s response for not singing the alma mater
It is interesting that Mullen said that he did not know that the band was in attendance at Williams-Brice Stadium. Meanwhile, the video below shows Mullen walking into the stadium with the band playing him in.
As for the previous week, Mullen was not there either. In fact, redshirt senior wide receiver Jordan Pouncey was the only individual on the team who participated in the singing of the alma mater following their 34-7 loss to Georgia.
The Gators’ season has not gone to plan. There was promise after the team almost beat Alabama earlier this year. But then, the losses kept piling up, including to the likes of the Kentucky Wildcats, LSU Tigers and Georgia. But the South Carolina loss may top them all, as they game looked like it was over in the second following a Jabari Ellis scoop-and-score touchdown to give the Gamecocks a 30-10 lead heading into halftime.
Mullen will look ahead to next week’s game against Samford. We shall see if the head coach will sing with the band like he says he will.
