Ohio State football: Jaxon Smith-Njigba sets program record for receptions vs. Nebraska
By Scott Rogust
Ohio State sophomore Jaxon Smith-Njigba set a single-game receiving record in Saturday’s win over Nebraska.
The Ohio State Buckeyes need to win out the remainder of the season to have a shot at making it into the College Football Playoff. While they did have a favorable matchup against Nebraska on Saturday, the Buckeyes had their hands full for a bit. But, they got the 26-17 win thanks to the historic performance of sophomore wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
In the game, Smith-Njigba hauled in 15 receptions for 240 yards and a touchdown. Those 15 catches are the most ever recorded by an Ohio State player in a single game!
Jaxon Smith-Njigba broke David Boston’s single-game receptions record
The record broken by Smith-Njigba was previously held by David Boston, who hauled in 14 passes back in 1997 against the Penn State Nittany Lions, per Ohio State’s official website.
Entering this game, the most receptions Smith-Njigba made in a single game was seven against the Oregon Ducks earlier this year. The sophomore logged 145 yards and two touchdowns in that contest, but it was Oregon who walked away with the 35-28 win.
Smith-Njigba logged 35 receptions for 648 yards and three touchdowns prior to his historic performance against Nebraska.
With Smith-Njigba now sitting atop the record books for most receptions in one game, let’s see if he can break it next week when the team takes on the Purdue Boilermakers.
