Raiders grasping at straws signing veteran DeSean Jackson
The Las Vegas Raiders are signing veteran wide receiver DeSean Jackson, a sign that the team is grasping at straws after a tough week.
On the same day that the Las Vegas Raiders offense couldn’t get off the ground in an eventual loss to the New York Giants, the franchise is making a move to, at least in theory, improve upon that. Per Josina Anderson, the silver and black are adding veteran wide receiver DeSean Jackson to the fold.
Jackson began the year with the Los Angeles Rams but, after speaking with the team and playing a minimal role with the prolific offense, he was released, thus opening the door for the Raiders to ink him to a deal.
Bringing in Jackson comes less than a week after former first-round pick Henry Ruggs III was involved in a deadly car crash that led to him being charged with DUI resulting in fatality, among other charges. He was released soon after the incident.
Raiders signing DeSean Jackson shouldn’t move the needle that much.
It’s not hard to understand why the Raiders would explore the possibility and ultimately sign Jackson. Losing Ruggs leaves a void in terms of a fast deep threat that the veteran wide receiver could, in theory, fill.
Given that DeSean Jackson hasn’t caught more than 14 passes in a season since the 2018 campaign, though, this feels like it’s not going to move the needle all that much.
Regardless of if this is grasping at straws or not, though, the Raiders had to try something and this is at least a passable option. We’ll have to see if it yields any fruit.
