The sports world makes for a beautiful palette but individual images can get lost in the constant shuffle. Here are the most iconic sports photos from Getty Images this week.
Will Smith and Travis d’Arnaud of the Atlanta Braves celebrate the team’s 7-0 victory against the Houston Astros in Game 6 to win the 2021 World Series at Minute Maid Park on November 2, 2021, in Houston, Texas.
With clinching moments, I like to not only capture the emotion in victory but frame it in a way that you see other members of the team. I automatically went to Travis d’Arnaud of the Atlanta Braves after I realized that the final out would be at first base. From my shooting position, I was behind Freddie Freeman who caught the final out. I couldn’t see his face but knew his teammates would look to him, so I went to players who were looking at him (and in a sense looking at me!).

Kyle Tucker of the Houston Astros nearly collides with Jose Siri after catching a fly-ball against the Atlanta Braves during the eighth inning in Game Six of the World Series at Minute Maid Park on November 2, 2021, in Houston, Texas.
In the postseason, sure every play matters, but those plays are intensified in clinching games. Kyle Tucker of the Houston Astros made the catch despite nearly colliding with teammate Jose Siri. Had the collision occurred or he dropped the ball, at least 2 runs would have been scored. The Atlanta Braves ultimately won the game by a significant margin, but it would have been worse if it were not for this catch by Tucker. As a photographer, I am not only looking for scoring plays but the great defensive plays that can hold an offensive powerhouse at bay.

Pat Maroon of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Liam O’Brien of the Arizona Coyotes fight during a game at Amalie Arena on October 28, 2021, in Tampa, Florida.
This was Pat Maroon’s second fight of the night, the first happening as soon as the puck dropped. This fight was a little more heated and Maroon seemed to be on the losing end of it. Seeing his helmet coming off while in the camera definitely made me smile a little because I knew it would tell a bit of a story on how intense the fight actually was. He spent a fair bit in the penalty box that night, but it made for a really nice picture.

Tony Bradley of the Chicago Bulls reacts after being hit in the face by Jared Butler of the Utah Jazz after Butler’s shot at the United Center on October 30, 2021, in Chicago, Illinois. The Bulls defeated the Jazz 107-99.
This photo was taken using a remote camera placed directly under the basket stanchion in a small rectangular hole, referred to by some as “the rat hole.” I love this spot on the floor for placing a remote as it offers a very unique view of the action from a position that isn’t seen by television or the average online viewer. In this shot, Tony Bradley of the Chicago Bulls reacts after being hit in the face by Jared Buter of the Utah Jazz, who went high for a shot and lost his balance as he came down to the floor. Bradley wasn’t seriously hurt and stayed in the game after a time out. The remote camera was triggered off of a camera and a referee blocked me as I tried to get the shot but the remote saved a sequence of the play and yielded this picture.
