Yankees free agency rumors: Sign Trevor Story

The Yankees have finally given up on the idea that Gleyber Torres can be their starting shortstop if they want to play quality infield defense. His move to second base leaves New York with a massive hole to fill at the glamorous position.

Fortunately for the Yankees, their need for a shortstop lines up exceptionally well with this offseason’s class of free agents. Luminaries like Carlos Correa, Corey Seager and Marcus Semien top the list of available free agents. Some fans seem to have forgotten about Story’s penchant for brilliance after a sluggish 2021 campaign.

Betting on position players to thrive away from Coors Field is always risky, but Story has exceptional speed and plays great defense. At worst, he projects as a solid contact player who can do everything else at an elite level. That gives him a very high floor along with a high ceiling for a legitimate contender like the Yankees.

New York might also try to take advantage of the number of star shortstops available on the open market to get Story on a slight discount. He’s still going to command a lucrative long-term deal, but he won’t get the same AAV as guys like Correa and Seager. That gives him a chance to turn into a relative value signing for the Yankees.
