ESPN’s Paul Finebaum tore the College Football Playoff committee apart as they made the bizarre decision to have Michigan ranked one spot over Michigan State.

The College Football Playoff committee is receiving plenty of well-deserved flak after ranking the Michigan Wolverines one spot higher than the Michigan State Spartans despite them holding a head-to-head win.

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum made sure to sound off on the bizarre decision from the CFP committee.

When asked as to how he could justify ranking the Wolverines over the Spartans, Finebaum stated it simply: “you can’t.”

Paul Finebaum sounds off on College Football Playoff committee’s decision to rank Michigan Wolverines over the Michigan State Spartans

“I was gobsmacked when I heard that last night. And then the explanation from the committee chairman Gary Barta made even less sense. He said ‘we looked at it and we concluded that Michigan was the better team.’ No! You must’ve missed a game if that was you conclusion,” Finebaum said.

The only argument that can truly be made to have Michigan ranked over Michigan State would be to acknowledge that the Wolverines’ lone loss is somehow better than the Spartans’ single loss. In theory, losing to Michigan State is better than losing to Purdue, but this sort of backwards logic puts an unhealthy emphasis on the “quality” of a team’s loss rather than properly weighing a team’s wins.

And Michigan State certainly has a very valuable win that should be brought up each and every moment the Spartans are compared and contrasted with the Wolverines: a solid 37-33 victory in East Lansing, Michigan.

If the playoff committee is going down this path, then why are games even played? Why does it matter who came out on top? Michigan State and Michigan have comparable records and the Spartans beat the Wolverines.

We’ve already seen this play out. Michigan State is better. Why are they not ranked as such?
