The griping 2021 Formula 1 season continues on Saturday with a sprint race to set the starting grid for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Formula 1 world championship is very much in the balance as drivers gear up for Saturday’s sprint qualifying at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

On Friday, qualifying for the sprint race saw Lewis Hamilton dominate proceedings on his way to the front of the grid. However, his place is in question after the FIA opened an investigation into a possible DRS infringement by the Mercedes team.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen looks to benefit from a Hamilton penalty as he finished second in qualifying, ahead of Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, who would move up to the front row.

How does F1 sprint qualifying work?

On a traditional race weekend, drivers would practice on Friday and Saturday before battling it out during three qualifying sessions to determine the lineup for Sunday’s race.

The introduction of a sprint race changes that. On Friday after a shorter practice, the teams compete in qualifying to set the grid for Saturday’s sprint race.

The sprint race itself is shorter than a normal race but the stakes are still high. The starting grid for Sunday is determined by the finishing order. On top of that, the first place driver scores three points, second place adds two to their tally while third place walks away with one point.
