Tim Tebow essentially gives Florida football head coach Dan Mullen his vote of confidence.

Things have not gone well of late for Dan Mullen and his Florida football team, but Gators legendary quarterback Tim Tebow believes his former offensive coordinator is this close to righting the ship in Gainesville.

On the set of ESPN’s College GameDay, Tebow provided a sliver of optimism regarding his beloved alma mater and its struggling head coach.

“They’re not that far off, right? It’s never as good as it seems, it’s never as bad as it seems,” said Tebow. “This is a team when they’re playing well, they can play with Alabama, they can play with Georgia, but they’ve also played down to the level of competition especially last weekend with South Carolina.”

“I think that sometimes as fans that you just sit back and see the results and you don’t always look at ‘why,’ but it’s not that big of a margin between them and the really good teams in the SEC right now.”

“There’s just a few things that have to get shored up, and I think one of them is leadership and figuring out who the next quarterback is going to be and a couple of defensive stops, I think all of a sudden you can see Florida get back to being a really good team, and a team that honestly is very close to competing for championships. They’re not as far away as their record would indicate.”

Florida entered play on Saturday at 4-5 on the year. The Gators were blown out by division rival South Carolina last week and have had way more difficulty putting away Samford than anyone reasonably expected. Florida fired two coaches after the South Carolina loss, including Mullen’s long-time defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. If Florida loses to Samford, Mullen has to go.

Tebow may think Florida is close to getting back to good, but will Mullen get an opportunity to redeem himself in 2022 after a disaster of a 2021 campaign?

Tim Tebow believes Dan Mullen can get the Florida football team back on track

The issue with Mullen has less to do with schematics as it does recruiting and the way he conducts himself in front of a microphone. It has been established that he can take a three-star and turn him into a first-round pick at places like Florida and Mississippi State before that. However, his reluctancy to be all-in on recruitment has only exacerbated things for him at Florida.

While going 8-4 in Starkville will result in one getting a statue commissioned in one’s likeness, anything less than consistent 10-win seasons will get one fired in Gainesville. Mullen will find another job if he and Florida part ways at the end of the season. However, Florida needs to realize what they are as a program before making another head-coaching change. This is not acceptable.

Though the right head coach can get Florida back to good, it is becoming increasingly clear that Mullen is no longer the right guy for the job in Gainesville.
