Will Rogers’ record-breaking outing leads Mississippi State’s historic comeback over Auburn
By Ethan Lee
Mike Leach made history happen as the Mississippi State Bulldogs made a remarkable comeback to beat the Auburn Tigers Saturday.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are looking pretty impressive after completing a fascinating comeback win on the road against the Auburn Tigers. At one point in the first half, Auburn claimed a 28-3 lead and looked nearly invincible against Mississippi State.
The Tigers choked that lead away as the Bulldogs went on to score 40 unanswered points and eventually win 43-34.
What was once a game that Auburn completely controlled became one in which Mississippi State made program history. The Bulldogs have been odd and impressive all year and this game was certainly a microcosm of that.
Mississippi State Bulldogs look bizarre and dangerous as Auburn Tigers blow 28-3 lead
This Mississippi State team is a bizarre one. While Auburn happens to be one of the weirdest teams in the country, it generally doesn’t get any weirder than a team coached by Mike Leach.
The Bulldogs are flawed in several ways, but they’ve clearly got plenty of potential and are moving in the right direction. While many doubted that the Air Raid would actually be effective in the SEC, Leach and Mississippi State are proving that this offense can work in college football toughest conference.
This season alone, Mississippi State has found a way to beat North Carolina State, Texas A&M, Kentucky, and now Auburn. Of course, the Bulldogs have also stumbled and lost to Memphis, LSU, and Arkansas in games they should have won.
But this program is definitely improving. In this season alone, Leach has helped Mississippi State snag its two largest comebacks ever.
That’s incredible.
Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers looks phenomenal against Auburn Tigers
No Air Raid offense works without a thrilling quarterback and the Bulldogs have just that in Will Rogers. Though he doesn’t have the strongest arm ever and he’s not the most dynamic athlete the SEC has ever seen, Rogers is dangerously efficient and quick to tear opposing defenses apart.
Rogers entered into the game having thrown for 3,307 yards and 23 touchdowns while completing 363-of-483 passes. He’d also thrown eight interceptions, but when someone is throwing the ball well over 50 times a game, they’re bound to throw an interception from time to time.
As long as Mississippi State’s offensive line can protect him for even a brief moment of time, Rogers will almost certainly find a receiver.
The Tigers defense found that out the hard way.
Saturday afternoon, Rogers completed 44-of-55 for 415 passing yards and a program-record six touchdowns. He now has 3,722 passing yards, 29 touchdowns and eight interceptions on the year. He is putting his name all over Mississippi State’s record books as Dak Prescott’s single-season records of passing yards (3,793) and touchdowns (29) will almost certainly no longer be his after next week.
