Report: Washington football firing head coach Jimmy Lake

Jimmy Lake came under intense scrutiny after the Washington football head coach struck a player in the facemask and now the Huskies will fire him.

Washington football has taken their share of tough blows this year but things have severely derailed for the Huskies in recent weeks, particularly in regards to head coach Jimmy Lake.

Two weeks ago, Lake came under fire after a heated exchange with a player saw him strike the player in the facemask and then shove him, which led to the head coach getting suspended for a Week 11 game against Arizona State. Then, a report surfaced that he also shoved a player back in 2019.

On Sunday, it all came to a head as Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel is reporting that Washington plans to fire Lake.

As mentioned, the Huskies won’t be firing Lake with cause and will pay him the remainder of his buyout in his contract.

With Jimmy Lake now out, the Washington football program will now be looking for a new leader. That obviously leads to a look at who could possibly be the next Huskies head coach.

One name that will certainly be thrown out is Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead. He’s done a phenomenal job and obviously has Pacific Northwest ties that could be valuable if Washington could convince him to leave Eugene.

Another possibility could be Cal head coach Justin Wilcox. He’s been a well-respected name in coaching circles for some time and could make a jump up in terms of program prestige with a move to Washington.

There are certainly other names to throw around that could be in play. We’ll see, however, where the Washington program elects to go as they part ways with Jimmy Lake.
