5 potential destinations for Max Scherzer in free agency
By John Buhler
The New York Yankees are in dire need of some more frontline starting pitching
With the New York Yankees expected to be big spenders this offseason, their fans better hope ownership opens up the pocketbook and gets some better starting pitching. Adding Scherzer to the rotation will make the Bronx Bombers very menacing over in the AL East. This is a team very much in win-now mode, which would align very well with Scherzer at this stage of his career.
Max Scherzer could reunite with Dusty Baker and win a World Series in Houston
One could argue the biggest reason the Houston Astros lost the World Series to the Atlanta Braves was they did not have enough starting pitching. Scherzer may be getting up there in age, but he would be a welcomed addition by his former Nationals skipper Dusty Baker. Given that Houston has won the AL pennant three of the last five years, this would be a great landing spot.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have to be the favorites to re-sign Max Scherzer
Even if he was dealt to Los Angeles as a short-term rental, the Dodgers would not be a bad place for Scherzer to close out his hall-of-fame career. They are championship contenders every year in the NL West. He has seen this team go on a run and play in a ton of meaningful postseason games. With guys like Walker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw in the rotation, Scherzer has to stay.
Expect other teams such as the New York Mets, the St. Louis Cardinals, the San Diego Padres and even the Washington Nationals to kick the tires on potentially signing Scherzer in his free agency.
