5 bold predictions for Packers against Vikings
4. Mercedes Lewis will catch five balls
Lewis runs more like a beat-up old Ford than a Mercedes at this stage of his career, but he’s still a valuable weapon for Rodgers when he needs a big catch on third down. He’s also got the size required to be a quality red-zone target when things get tight for the Green Bay offense.
The Vikings know they don’t have the secondary talent to play tight coverage against the Packers in single coverage. That’s why Minnesota will spend lots of time in two-deep zone looks to keep everything in front of them.
That alignment is going to leave even more room for Green Bay’s tight ends to catch short throws over the middle. Rodgers will need to stay patient to take advantage of those matchups, but a veteran like him will understand the value of jabbing the Vikings’ defense with 6-8 yard easy pitches and catches.
Lewis isn’t going to put on a show against Minnesota, but he’ll catch at least five passes and there’s an outside shot he finds his way into the end zone. Rodgers’ comfort level with the veteran tight end shouldn’t be ignored.
